Is bloodwork painful for pets?

Not at all. The process is over within a matter of seconds and feels similar to any type of injection or booster shot your pet may receive. Sedation or anesthesia is not required during bloodwork because most patients tolerate it well.

Why does my pet need bloodwork?

The vet may order bloodwork for your pet for a wide variety of reasons including:

  • If they notice a cause of concern during an appointment that needs further analysis
  • If your pet has an ongoing medical condition that needs monitoring (e.g. diabetes, pregnancy)
  • Before your pet’s operation assess if they are a good candidate

Do pets need to fast before blood tests?

Ideally, yes, although accurate results can still be achieved if the patient has not fasted. For example, the doctor may order bloodwork if they notice any signs of illness during an appointment.
