Do dogs need vaccinations?

Absolutely! Without vaccines, your pet can be vulnerable to several serious and life-threatening diseases. In fact, the Rabies vaccine is mandated by law and for good reason - it is an incurable condition. Even indoor dogs need their vaccines because they can be exposed to disease at various places such as:

  • The groomers
  • Doggy daycare
  • Kennels
  • Other people’s homes

NOTE: Disease and parasites can also make their way into your home through objects, people and other animals (e.g. mosquitoes).

What type of vaccines do dogs need?

All dogs need to receive their “core” set of vaccines. These are mandatory injections. Then, the veterinarian will recommend a set of “non-core” or optional vaccines based on you and your pet’s unique circumstance. Some of the factors that can affect the optional vaccines suggested by the doctor include:

  • Your pet’s age and current health status
  • Your living environment (e.g. urban vs rural setting, warm vs cold climates)
  • Lifestyle (e.g. pets that compete in sports or those that hunt will require different vaccines versus those that are mostly indoors)
